HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/24/80 MINUTES OF HASTINGS PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING MONDAY, NOVEMBER Z4, 1980 7:30 P. M. The meeting was cai[ed to order at 7:30 I°.M. by Acting Chairman Murphy. Members Present Commissioners Murphy, Stevens, Von Peldt, Reuter, Simacek, Freiermuth, and Kumkel, who arrived at 7:45 P. M. Members Absent Commissioners Bultman, and Wendler. Moved by Comm~ssioner Simacek, seconded by Commissioner Stevens to approve the minutes of the November 10, 1980 meeting. 6 Ayes- O Nayes. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The proposal involved a lot size that was less than the minimum required by the ordinance. Therefor, a variance from the lot size requirement would be necessary. Moved by Commissioner Simacek, seconded by Commissioner Freiermuth to schedule a public hearing for the D~cember 8, 1980 Planning Commission meeting. 6 Ayes- 0 Nayes. SPECIAL USE PERMIT AND VARIANCE REQUEST-FOR A TWO FAMILY DWELLING IN AN R-2 ZONING DISTRICT- 818 W. 12TH STREET-MR. DON OLS ON Mr. Freiermuth gave the committee report which indicated th:* committee felt that the sign size limitations should remain as they are in the R-1 and R-2 zoning districts, but !:hat signs for apartment developments and institutiona[ uses in the R-3 and R-4 zoning districts be increased. The committee also recommended denial of the current variance request for a 36 square foot sign where a 6 square foot sign would be allowed under the present ordinance. OOMMITTEE REPORT - SIGN SIZE VARIANCE- WESI~VIE W VILLAGE APARTMENTS- WESTVIEW DRIVE Moved by Commissioner Freiermuth, seconded by Commissioner Reuter to deny the request from Schumacher-Keller property Managers for a variance from the sign ordinance to allo,~r a 36 square foot sign where a 6 square foot sign would be permitted, based upon the discrepancy between the request and the standards of the sign ordinance. However, it is also recommended that the Plam. ning Gommiss ion prepare an ordinance amendment to permit larger institutional signs in the residential zoning districts, and larger apartment development signs in the R-3 and R-4 zoning districts to a maximum of 24 square feet. 6Ayes-0 Nayes, Kunkel abstained. ~nutes of I tastings Planning Acting Chain~an l~urphy suggested that the matter be dealt with by a comTRttee whole, meeting at 5 o'clock on Monday, Decent~r 1, 1980. The Comaission members then discussed various methods of relating sign sizes to the size of the property or building.
