HASTINGS PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING
MONDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1980

The meeting was called to order at 7:32 P.M. by Chairman Wend[er.
Members Present:
Commisioners Wend[er, Stevens, Von Feldt,
Reuter, tgultman, Simacek, Kunke[, Freiermuth
and Murphy.
Members Absent: None.
Moved by Commissioner Murphy, seconded by
Commissioner Simacek to approve the Minutes of the
October 4, 1980 meeting. 9 Ayes - 0 Nayes.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The l~lanner explained that the request was for a 36
square foot s'hgn, and that the ordinance only allowed
a max[mum of 6 square feet. Mr. Jim Vaessen, a
representative of the petitioner indicated that there
were a number of other signs in existence that were
larger (in violation) and that the sign was not too large
when considering the size of the area in v~ch it would
be located.

Moved by Commissioner Simacek to deny the variance
request because it was inconsistent with the intent of
the sign ordinance. Moved by Commissioner
Freiermuth, seconded by Commissioner Reuter to
table the request until the next meeting and have a
committee review the sign ordinance as it relates to
apartment complexes. 9 Ayes - 0 Nayes.
Chairman Wend[er referred the matter to the
Freiermuth Committee and added Commissioners
Simacek and Murphy.
Mr. Kluender was requesting a "pole shed" to house
equipment that he uses on the premises for his gravel
operation.
Moved by Commissioner Murphy, seconded by
Commissioner Reuter to schedule a Public Hearing
for the November [0, 1980 Planning Commission

Chairman Wend[er referred the matter to the
Murphy Committee and added Commissioners
Stevens and Wend[er.
The Planner brought the Planning Commission up
to date on the current status of Rivers Edge develop-
ment. He informed them that he expected the
development contract and the development plans to be
ready for approval at the next Ptanning Commission
meeting.
The city had recently advertised the Spiral BaH Park
for sale and specified only certakn uses be permitted.
The property was zoned agricultural. The purchaser,
Joe O'Brien ChevroIet, was requesting rezoning to
a C-2 zoning classification, for construction of an
automotive dealership.
Moved by Commissioner Murphy, seconded by
Commissioner Simacek to recommend approval of
the rezoning, as it was consistent with the Iong range
development plans for the area. 9 Ayes - 0 Nayes.
Moved by Commissioner Freiermuth, seconded by
Commissioner Simacek to adjourn at 8:[3 P.M.
