Public Safety Advisory Commission
Abbreviate Minutes
October 18, 2018 – 6:30 p.m.
Volunteer Room
1) Meeting called to order at 6:34 pm by Acting Chair, Dolores Pemble.
2) Commission members present were Pemble, Augesen, Blackstad, and Rohloff. Ascheman,
Holmes, and Starkson absent. Staff Members present were Chief Schafer, Asst. Fire Chief
Townsend, and Firefighter Jeremy Hall.
3) Old Business – Approval of the 8/16/2018 minutes with one correction noting Pemble was
in attendance at that meeting.
4) Employee introduction - Jeremy Hall introduced himself to the Commission and gave an
overview of why he became a Hastings Firefighter.
5) New Business
a) Fire Department updates
b) Police Department Updates
c) Chief Schafer recommended the commission start preparing a year-end report for
council. Content and method to be discussed at the December meeting.
d) Schafer requested Augesen, Starkson, and Rohloff submit letters of interest if they wish
to be considered for re-appointment in 2019.
e) The commission was asked if there was interest in exploring a Tobacco 21 and Vaping
Ordinance. Those present were in support of addressing both issues in one ordinance.
f) Schafer disseminated a memo from CM Braucks regarding Residential Rental Licensing
concerns from some neighborhood members. The Commission is being asked if there is
interest in looking into this matter as it pertains to sex offenders and
recovery/rehabilitation services. The Commission wanted more time to review the
materials and will discuss further at the December meeting.
6) Establish/confirm next meeting date – December 20, 2018 - Pemble
7) Adjournment –7:47 pm by Pemble.
