City Council Memorandum To: Mayor Hicks & City Councilmembers From: Barry Bernstein, Parks and Recreation Director Date: 6/27/12 Item: Play Equipment -Crestview Park Council Action Requested:
Approve the purchase of replacement play equipment at Crestview Park from Minnesota/Wisconsin Playgrounds. Background Information: At the June 12, 2012 Parks and Recreation Commission
meeting, three playground manufacturer's sales representatives were invited to present to the PRC their playground play equipment concepts. The instructions to each sales representitive
were the same -to create and present a unique play feature costing $42,000 which included the safety material. The remaining funding of $8,000 is for weed barrier, border and installation.
Generally, installation can cost up to 20% of the purchase price, but I have circumvented the installation costs by hiring installers from the play equipment company to work alongside
Parks and Recreation maintenance staff and possible volunteers at a reduced rate. Financial Impact: This project's approved budget is $50,000. This project will not exceed this figure.
$42,000 for the play equipment which includes safety material $4-5,000 (approx) for cement curb border with maintenance strip $3,000 (approx) for installation, weed barrier and cement
Advisory Commission Discussion: At the June PRC meeting, two of the three invited representitives presented their concepts to the PRC as the third company sent me an email the week prior
informing me that they would not be available on June 12. It was decided to continue with just the two presenters as it may have been unfair to invite another company on such short notice.
The sales representitives were Webber Recreation and Minnesota/Wisconsin Playgrounds. The PRC held a discussion after the presentations and is recommending to the City Council to proceed
with Minnesota/Wisconsin Playgrounds for the replacement equipment at Crestview Park. Council Committee Discussion: None Attachments: • Design options/costs from Minnesota/Wisconsin
