HomeMy WebLinkAbout20100719 - VI-12HASTINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT MEMO T - A Honorable Mayor Hicks City Council FROM: Paul P. Schnell, Chief of Police 'Wit DATE: July 14, 201 SUBJECT: Donation for Hastings Police Service Dog K -9 Program 1 any recommending and requesting your approval for the acceptance of a donation of $150.00 t the Hastings Police Service Dog K -9 program from the Anselment family of Eagan, Minnesota. As you may know, since 2005, the City of Ha Stings has been well- served by police service dog K- Eis and his officer handler Mike Schnitz. While extremely well caged for, E« has developed arthritis, which over the next 8 -12 months will seriously impair his ability to function in his role as the department's I n police service ri dog. Police service dogs are incredible assets and our ability to utilize and share this important resource w ith our local partners is, simply put, a force multiplier. In anticipation of EIs' medical retirement, we have already reached out to the non - profit Saint Paul Police K -9 Foundation who has agreed to provide significant funding ($4,000.00) toward the anticipated cost of $, to acquire a replacement dog. The plan is that we would have ar new police service dog on the street in early to mid 2011. The donation from the Ans lm nts will be f assistance to the Hastings Police Department Police Service Dog K- program. Please let me know If you have any questions or concerns.
