HomeMy WebLinkAbout20100517 - VIII-C-2 MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers FROM: Dave Osberg, City Administrator DATE: May 13, 2010 SUBJECT: Designation of Police Chief Finalists RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION As part of the meeting on Monday May 17, 2010 the City Council will be asked to take action designating the three finalists for the position of Police Chief. As the names become available from PDI, they will be forwarded to the City Council. BACKGROUND On Tuesday May 11, 2010 six candidates for the position of Police Chief were interviewed at Hastings City Hall. Each candidate interviewed with three different panels. One panel consisted of members of the Hastings Police Department, including both sworn officers and members of the support staff. Two additional panel were comprised of several citizens from the community, a Hastings High School Student, a Police Chief from a Police Department in the Twin Cities, a representative from the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, a Hastings School District Principal ; a pastor from a local parish, and a Hastings City Council and Hastings Police Civil Service Commission Member. The panelists ought to be commended on their involvement in the process. The input provided by the panels has been forwarded to PDI to be collated. The top three names will then be brought forward in alphabetical order to be designated as finalists. At that point, those names will be public. Following the May 17 City Council meeting, the three finalists will each participate in a leadership assessment process at Personnel Decisions Inc. (PDI), a second round of interviews, and a community reception/Q&A session. Additionally, thorough background and reference checks will be conducted. The second round of interviews have been scheduled for the afternoon of May 24, 2010. Following the interviews, there will be reception for the public to meet and briefly visit with the three finalists where each candidate will provide a brief presentation and there will be a Question and Answer session with all three candidates. A joint meeting of the Public Safety Committee and Police Civil Service Commission is scheduled for Tuesday morning June 1, 2010 at 7:30 AM, to formulate a recommendation on the final selection of the Police Chief, with the expectation the full City Council will take action at the meeting on June 7, 2010 authorizing the hiring of the Police Chief.
