HomeMy WebLinkAbout20100503 - VI-03 MEMO To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Nick Egger – City Engineer Date: April 29, 2010 Re: Approve Quotes & Authorize Work – Watermain Pipe Bursting on Pleasant Drive The Engineering Department solicited quotes from two specialty contractors to perform th trenchless watermain repair along Pleasant Drive from 16 Street to Honeysuckle Lane. The work involves “pipe-bursting”, in which a new, drinking water rated plastic PVC watermain pipe will be pulled through the existing watermain pipe behind a “bursting” head, which breaks up the old pipe. The following is a summary of the results. ContractorQuote Penn Contracting, Inc. $50,580.00 Insituform Technologies $99,905.00 USA, Inc. Though slightly more expensive than traditional watermain replacement, this type of installation will eliminate the need to excavate the entire 580 foot long stretch of Pleasant Drive, instead requiring excavation only at the two ends of the replacement section and at th 15 Street. The process will take less time and cause less inconvenience to the public. It will also preserve the existing curb and gutter, allowing for the street construction contractor to use the process of “full depth recycling” of the pavement. This work would begin in mid to late May and be completed over the course of a few days. Council is requested to approve the quote from Penn Contracting, Inc., and authorize work to begin. 1177 Birch Lake Blvc.
