Subject: Ordinance Amendment changing the name of the Natural Resources and Recreation
Commission (NRRC)
Date: 3/22/10
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
Council Action Required:
Conduct the public hearing and approve the second reading and ordinance amendment relating to
changing the name of the Natural Resources and Recreation Commission.
Background Information:
The Natural Resources and Recreation Commission met for their regularly scheduled meeting on
March 9 to discuss a request to amend the current name of the commission to more appropriately
th
identify what the NRRC oversees.
This item was brought forward at the request of the NRRC in an attempt to better illustrate to the
general public that the commission oversees land acquisition, open spaces, parks, and
recreation/leisure services.
The suggested name change by the NRRC came to fruition at recent meetings with a neighborhood.
The neighborhood residents, due to no fault of their own, did not understand when NRRC
commissioners introduced themselves and informed the neighborhood residents that they served on
the NRRC. The residents questioned what the NRRC is.
The NRRC feels by changing their commission’s name, this would bring more focus and notoriety to
the commission. The NRRC recommended bringing this issue forward to the Parks and Recreation
Committee and they in turn, recommended bringing this issue to the full City Council with the
recommendation to change the name of the NRRC to Parks and Recreation Commission.
