Re: Authorize Purchase of Tire Changer and Balancing Equipment
Council is requested to authorize purchase of tire changing and balancing
equipment at a cost of $10,800. This equipment purchase was not included in
the 2009 or 2010 budget due to budget limitations, but was first requested in the
2008 budget request.
If the tire changing equipment were used by the Public Works, Parks, Fire
and Police Departments, I estimate that the equipment would pay for itself within
5 years. Currently, Public Works purchases replacement tires through a
wholesaler. When tires need changing, operators drop off tires and rims to a tire
store for changing and balancing and then return to the store to pick up the new
tire when work is completed. Having tire changing capability in house would not
only save on the tire store mounting and balancing expenses, but would also
eliminate the extra time involved in dropping off and picking up tires.
Staff is recommending funding the tire changing and balancing equipment
through the use of unspent 2009 budget balances. The Fire Department has
identified $6,500 in unspent 2009 budget funds for clothing and badges, and
Public Works has identified a total of $4,300 in unspent 2009 budget funds for
small tools and equipment in the Streets, Water, Wastewater, and Hydro budgets.
