Home My WebLink About20070205 - VII-1VII-1 MEMO To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Tom Montgomery Date: January 30, 2007 Re: Accept State Bids and Authorize Purchase of Street Department Dump Truck, Pickup and Asphalt Patch Box The 2007 Public Works Street budget included funding for the purchase of a replacement dump truck, pickup truck and asphalt patch box. The 2007 budget included trading in the replaced dump truck. However, when researching patch boxes further this winter, the Public Works crews are recommending purchasing a truck mounted patch box, and mounting the patch box on the dump truck that was to be traded in. The price for the Public Works pickup truck came in about $4,000 below budget, but the increased cost of a truck mounted patch box and removing the trade in from the new dump truck purchase results in these two purchases running $9,000 over budget - or a net $5,000 over budget for all three pieces of equipment. PATCH BOX The budgeted asphalt patch box would replace an asphalt hot mix trailer that is at least 35 years old. The budgeted patch box would slide in and out of a typical dump truck box and hold and heat asphalt mix used for patching streets. This winter, the Public Works crews researched patch boxes further, including visiting other metro communities and looking at their street patching operations. They learned that a truck mounted patch box greatly increases the safety of the patching operations, as the V-shaped patch box allows crews to see much more of the street from a position at the rear of the truck. In addition, a truck mounted patch box allows for the storage of street patching tools and equipment on the truck, eliminating the need for an additional pickup truck on the patching crew. Other benefits include a lower mounting height, and the dedicated truck would make the patch box easier and more efficient to use during winter months for cold patch repairs. PICKUP TRUCK 2007 budget included $28,000 for a replacement pickup truck. The state bid for a 2007 Chev 2500HD pickup truck with a back rack, emergency light and spray on bed liner is $22,376.72.
