HomeMy WebLinkAbout20090406 - VI-08To: Mayor Hicks & City- Councihnembers From: Melanie Mesko Lee, Assistant City- Administrator Re: Ordinance Amendments Related to City- License Terms Date: April 1, 2009 Council Action Requested: Approve the first reading and order a public hearing and a second reading for an ordinance amendment relating to City license terms. Background Information: The City issues a number of different licenses throughout the year, many of «hich are held by the same establishments. In an effort to consolidate renewals for licensees, staff proposes changing the license term for tobacco and amusement licenses to coincide ~~ith the license term for liquor licenses, ~~hich is currently- Ju1~- 1-June 30. Current license terms for tobacco licenses are Januai~- 1-December 31, and August 1-July 31 for amusement licenses. Many of our local businesses that hold a liquor license also hold tobacco and/or amusement licenses; this change would result in one renewal packet being sent to licensed establishments for up to three types of licenses. The revie~~- and approval process is not proposed to change; simply the timeline that staff uses during the annual renewals. Additionally, staff proposes to change from aone-rear dog license period to a t«-o year license. This is not uncommon in other communities, and staff regularly- receives feedback from the public that a two year dog license would be welcomed. If the change is approved, dog licenses issued in 2009 would expire in July- 2011.
