SUBJECT: Recommendation of Denial of the Request to Write Off
Ambulance Bills for Mr. Gerald Erickson
After receiving the written request from Mr. Gerald Erickson asking the City to write
off his two ambulance bills, I reviewed both of the ambulance run sheets.
I am recommending the denial of this request from Mr. Gerald Erickson for the
following reasons:
1. Mr. Erickson was involved in a motorcycle vs. deer accident on County
Road 47 & approximately 315` Street on November 8, 2006. Upon the arrival of the
emergency crew, they assessed their patient and concluded that their patient
needed treatment as well as to be seen by a physician. The ambulance crew
administered three different types of treatment before transporting their patient to
Regina Medical Center. Due to the nature of his injuries, it was determined that he
needed medical attention at Regina Medical Center.
2. After Regina Medical Center's staff assessed their patient and upon request
from Regina Medical licensed staff for an ambulance transfer from their facility to a
higher level of trauma care, we transported Mr. Erickson to Regions Hospital in St.
Paul, which is a trauma center. This ambulance crew maintained treatment for Mr.
Erickson enroute to Regions Hospital as well as monitoring his vitals and condition.
3. Per protocol, we are unable to force any patient into our ambulances unless
they are a minor without a guardian to take responsibility for that minor or any
patient who is medically unable to make that decision. Mr. Erickson's injuries were
consistent with that of a trauma patient and needed to be evaluated by a licensed
staff member of Regina Medical Center

4. Our ambulance service offers any patient, if they are unable to pay the total
lump sum payment at one time, the option to pay their ambulance bill on a
monthly time payment agreement; which is interest free. We will accept any dollar
amount and only require that they continue to make those payments monthly. Mr.
Erickson has been made aware of this time payment agreement as an option for him
to participate in.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter and if you should have any
questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me, prior to the city
council meeting, at 651-480-6150 or via my cell phone at 651-775-5545. I will be
attending the city council meeting on Monday, March 5, 2007.
Requested Action: Denial of the request to write off the two ambulance bills for Mr.
Gerald Erickson.
