Approval of 2007 Wellness Training and Grant Application
Recommended City Council Action:
Approve offering a variety of wellness training opportunities to city employees, and authorize
staff to apply for a grant to reimburse the City for wellness costs.
Baclceround Information:
The City belongs to the South Central Service Cooperative to purchase our health insurance. The
co-op also offers wellness and health promotion grant dollars. In 2006, the City took advantage
of $2,080 in grant money to offer CPR, and purchase CPR masks and water bottles for staff. For
2007, we are working on a training schedu}e with the following themes:
1~` Quarter: Financial Fitness-free tax filing through the City's Employee Assistance
Program, employee presentation on new Roth IRA program and one-on-one meetings
with City's deferred compensation representative.
2"a Quarter: Simple Steps-encouragement to enroll in and participate in the joint Dakota
County/City of Hastings Simple Steps program. Intend to offer pedometers to employees
who enroll in the Simple Steps program and fulfill the participation requirements.
Additionally, we offered a Safety Training Day on April 20 where there were
presentations on a variety of safety/wellness topics, and Regina and local massage
therapists were present to conduct cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI, and blood sugar
screenings and chair massages. Attendees were given a mini firs[ aid kit. Finally, a
fitness coordinator with the YMCA will give a presentation on getting active and keeping
an exercise program fresh.
3`a Quarter: Relaxation & Rejuvenation-this theme will focus on stress relief
techniques, including offering a 4-week introductory to yoga class and a presentation on
stress relief/meditation techniques.
4'" Quarter: Benefits FairBiggest Loser Contest-the fmal quarter will focus on end of
year insurance open enrollment, with current providers being invited to our benefits fair
to provide information to employees. Additionally, we plan to offer health screenings at
the benefits fair. The promotion this quarter will be a focus on making healthy food
choices, with the intent to provide lunch bags to employees, and incorporate some
friendly, non-threatening competition with the Biggest Loser competition, where the goal
is to lose weight as a group.
