HomeMy WebLinkAbout20070507 - VI-31To: From: Date: Re: Mayor Hicks and City Councilmembers Melanie Mesko Lee May 2, 2007 Approval of 2007 Wellness Training and Grant Application Recommended City Council Action: Approve offering a variety of wellness training opportunities to city employees, and authorize staff to apply for a grant to reimburse the City for wellness costs. Baclceround Information: The City belongs to the South Central Service Cooperative to purchase our health insurance. The co-op also offers wellness and health promotion grant dollars. In 2006, the City took advantage of $2,080 in grant money to offer CPR, and purchase CPR masks and water bottles for staff. For 2007, we are working on a training schedu}e with the following themes: 1~` Quarter: Financial Fitness-free tax filing through the City's Employee Assistance Program, employee presentation on new Roth IRA program and one-on-one meetings with City's deferred compensation representative. 2"a Quarter: Simple Steps-encouragement to enroll in and participate in the joint Dakota County/City of Hastings Simple Steps program. Intend to offer pedometers to employees who enroll in the Simple Steps program and fulfill the participation requirements. Additionally, we offered a Safety Training Day on April 20 where there were presentations on a variety of safety/wellness topics, and Regina and local massage therapists were present to conduct cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI, and blood sugar screenings and chair massages. Attendees were given a mini firs[ aid kit. Finally, a fitness coordinator with the YMCA will give a presentation on getting active and keeping an exercise program fresh. 3`a Quarter: Relaxation & Rejuvenation-this theme will focus on stress relief techniques, including offering a 4-week introductory to yoga class and a presentation on stress relief/meditation techniques. 4'" Quarter: Benefits FairBiggest Loser Contest-the fmal quarter will focus on end of year insurance open enrollment, with current providers being invited to our benefits fair to provide information to employees. Additionally, we plan to offer health screenings at the benefits fair.
