PROCLAMATION OF THE
HASTINGS CITY COUNCIL
RECOGNIZING THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN
FOR THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS ON
TUESDAY JUNE 19TH, 2007
IN THE CITY OF HASTINGS
WHEREAS, The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics raises funds and
awareness for Special Olympics worldwide; and
WHEREAS, all 50 states and more than 35 nations have their own version of the Torch
Run; and
WHEREAS, in Minnesota, the first Torch Run was organized in 1988 and Special
Olympics Minnesota now has the support of the Minnesota Association of Chiefs of Police, the
Minnesota State Patrol Troopers Association, and Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police; and
WHEREAS, the Hastings Sharks are the local Special Olympics Minnesota sport team
meeting the needs of athletes with intellectual disabilities in the Hastings area and consists of
over 90 athletes who participate in basketball, bowling, swimming, poly hockey, gymnastics, and
golf; and
WHEREAS, the Hastings Sharks are fortunate to have the financial support of the
community and the gift of time from volunteer coaches; and
WHEREAS, on Tuesday, June 19, 2007, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will pass
through Hastings for the first time on the way to the 2007 Special Olympics Minnesota Summer
Games at the University of Minnesota Bierman Field; and
WHEREAS, the torch will arrive during the opening ceremonies on Thursday, June 21,
2007.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Hastings,
that the Special Olympics' Law Enforcement Torch Run, Special Olympics Minnesota and the
Hastings Sharks are recognized for their contributions for assisting athletes with intellectual
disabilities.
