HomeMy WebLinkAbout20070716 - Memo Change Order/Project 2007-1MEMO To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Tom Montgomery Date: July 16, 2007 Re: Add to Agenda -Change Order, Project 2007-1, 5th St. Area Retaining Walls Council is requested to add to the agenda consideration of a change order to the 5th Street Area street and utility reconstruction project for an older looking style of modular block retaining wall in the Conservation District. This retaining wall question is coming forth due to the Planning Department's recommendation for a less modern looking retaining wall within the Conservation District as part of their review of the Deitner retaining wall on 2nd Street. The City's standard specifications call for the use of a modern modular concrete block wall similar to the one proposed by Mr. Deitner. Retaining walls using this modern modular block were constructed last year as part of the 3rd St. area reconstruction project within the Conservation District and in 2000 as part of the 4th St. project. This year, as part of the 5th St. project, the Public Works Department worked with the HPC to review options for installation of a large retaining wall on Ashland Street, south of 5th St., around the Specht house and stairs, which are identified as historically significant. Based on recommendations from the HPC and the Specht family, the contractor will be installing a tumbled block wall. The tumbled block walls are $1.00 per square foot more expensive than the modern modular block walls, and we estimate that the additional total cost to switch to these walls for the rest of the project within the Conservation District would cost about $3,600. If the City wishes to change the type of block walls, the manufacturer will need authorization to begin making the block by next week in order to keep the project on schedule. COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED Council is requested to approve a change order to the 5th St. Area Improvement Project to install tumbled modular block retaining walls in the Conservation District. ...- ~ ~_ ~ -., r .
