Holmes, Fire Chief 4f )..)-- DATE: August 1, 2007 SUBJECT: Approval of Specifications and Authorize Request for Bid Proposals for Two Ambulances The Fire Department staffs and maintains three ambulances for use within our service area. The service life for each ambulance is most cost effective when replacement occurs at approximately 150,000 miles, meeting this objective would mean purchasing a new unit every three years. Ambulances are rotated by age and use so that a ten year expected lifespan can occur. Included in the 2007 fire department budget as approved, an ambulance replacement was to occur. Unfortunately, the industry standard Ford chassis was unavailable early in the year. It is expected that chassis will be available after November of 2007. The increased use of our other ambulances, as a result of this problem, has produced an additional ambulance in the 140,000 mile range. This unit, a 2002 is new enough in design and the condition of the patient module would allow for remounting on a new chassis. When remounting patient modules, all repairs necessary are made and a complete process of rust-proofing and repainting occurs. I would propose that in addition to purchasing a new ambulance approval be given for a refurbished and remounting of an additional ambulance. Combining these projects into one bid proposal, would hopefully reduce the overall cost and more importantly allow us to retain our trade-in ambulance until both projects are completed. This proposal would provide for the availability of three ambulances continuously throughout this process. It is anticipated that in addition to the previously approved $140,000 an additional $75,000 would be necessary. Funding for this complete proposal is available in the fire department's Equipment Reserve Fund (ERF). Copies of the specifications for this proposal are available at the fire station for your reView. Reauested Action: Approval for solicitation of bid proposals for a new ambulance and the remounting and refurbishing of a second ambulance.
