SUBJECT: Proposed Adoption of Resolution Accepting Donation from Kathryn Anne Kane Trust
Descriation
Captain Joseph Kane was a 21-year member of the Hastings Fire Department. Joe and his wife Beth resided in
Hastings. Sadly, Captain Kane passed away in 2005. This past summer, their daughter, Kathryn Anne Kane
passed away. In her trust, it was her wish to donate $10,000 to the Hastings Fire Department in honor of her
father, Captain Kane. Please see attached memo from her family.
Background
In addition to being a firefighter, Captain Kane also owned and operated Phillips 66 Gas and Service Station in
Hastings for many years, which was located on the corner of Vermillion and 5"' Streets. This building was razed
in 1992 to make room for expansion of the current fire station. In discussions with my predecessors, Captain
Kane would close his business without notice to respond on emergency calls. His heart was truly with the
citizens of Hastings.
A consensus among the staff is that we would like to honor all of the retired Hastings firefighters in creating an
honor wall at the fire station. This wall would contain pictures of retired firefighters along with their names and
years of service. With the rich heritage the City of Hastings offers, this is one additional way we can honor our
retirees who gave so much to the community.
It is our intention, to use a portion of this donation to cover the costs associated with this project. With the year-
end fast approaching, I am also requesting the remaining portion be carried over into the 2008 budget year.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via my cell phone, 651-775-5547, at anytime. I will be
in attendance of the December 3`d City Council meeting, should you have any questions of me at that time.
Requested Action:
