OF THE HASTINGS CITY COUNCIL
RECOGNIZING THE LAW ENFORCEMENT
TORCH RUN FOR
THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS AND DECLARING
TUESDAY JUNE 17~, 2008
AS "SPECIAL OLYMPICS DAY"
IN THE CITY OF HASTINGS
WHEREAS, The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics raises funds and awareness
for Special Olympics worldwide; and
WHEREAS, all 50 states and more than 35 nations have their own version of the Torch Run in
honor of Special Olympics athletes around the world; and
WHEREAS, in Minnesota., the first Torch Run was organized in 1988 and Special Olympics
Minnesota now has the support of the Minnesota Association of Chiefs of Police, the Minnesota State
Patrol Troopers Association, and Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police; and
WHEREAS, the Hastings Sharks are the local Special Olympics Minnesota sport team meeting
the needs of athletes with intellectual disabilities in the Hastings area and consists of over 90 athletes who
participate in basketball, bowling, swimming, poly hockey, gymnastics, and golf; and
WHEREAS, the Hastings Sharks are fortunate to have the fmancial support of the community
and the gift of time from volunteer coaches; and
WHEREAS, on Tuesday, June 17, 2008, the Law Enforcement Torch Run will pass through
Hastings on the way to the 2008 Special Olympics Minnesota Summer Games; and
WHEREAS, the torch will arrive during the opening ceremonies on Thursday, June 19, 2008.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Hastings that the
Special Olympics' Law Enforcement Torch Run, Special Olympics Minnesota and the Hastings Sharks
are recognized for their contributions for assisting athletes with intellectual disabilities, and Tuesday, June
17, 2008 is hereby declared as
"Special Olympics Day"
in the City of Hastings.
