DATE: November 12, 2008
SUBJECT: Fire Alarm Ordinance Compliance Date
Background
On May 7, 2007, city council approved a fire alarm ordinance pertaining to mixed occupancy
buildings when one of the occupancies is residential. Included in that ordinance was a
compliance date of May 31, 2009, for existing structures.
With the current economic conditions, staff has been approached by many of the affected
building owners to ask for an extension of this compliance date. Staff has met and is empathetic
to their concerns and is recommending an extension of the compliance date for two years.
Requested Action
Approve the first reading of the ordinance amendment, extending the implementation date from
May 31, 2009, to May 31, 2011, and order a public hearing and a second reading for
December 1, 2008.
