HomeMy WebLinkAbout20081215 - VIII-A-1VIII-A-1 MEMO To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Tom Montgomery Date: December 10, 2008 Re: Authorize Purchase of Plow Truck The 2oog Public Works budget includes $146,500 to purchase of a replacement snow plow truck. Lead time on truck orders is about seven to eight months, and by ordering the truck as soon as possible, we can make sure the truck will be ready in time for an operator to become familiar with the new vehicle in time for next year's snow removal operations. Earlier this year, we learned that Sterling will stop manufacturing the plow trucks used by the City. Not wanting to purchase an orphan truck, Public Works is proposing to buy a Mack truck off the state bid. The Mack truck is more expensive, but has a stronger frame and better torque than the Sterling trucks, and is expected to have a longer working life and higher trade in value. Below is a breakout of the truck cost and Public Works budget. The Mack truck is about $13,000 more than what was budgeted for in 2oog. I am proposing to make up the difference by utilizing the $15,000 budgeted for 2008 for the purchase of three new sanders. These replacement sanders were requested to help control salt usage, but Public Works was able to retrofit the existing sanders with kits that reduce the flow openings, allowing better control of the quantity of salt dispersal. 2009 Snow Plow Cost Truck and Chassis Plow, Underbody Plow, Sander, Box, Controls Wing Plow Trade In TOTAL 2oog Budget Amount 2008 Budget for 3 Replacement Sanders COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED Council is requested to authorize the purchase of the 2oog snow plowT truck and transfer of the 2008 sander replacement funds to supplement the 2009 truck purchase budget. $80,721.00 $74332.74 $14,497.84 -$20,000.00 $159~551.5g $146,500.00 $15,000.00 $161,500.00 ^, ~~ ALE' = - ~ ~- ~_ ~ ~. __ CITY OI• IIASTIN65
