To: Mayor Fasbender and City Councilmembers
From: Justin Fortney, City Planner
Date: December 16, 2024
Item: Heritage Preservation Commission Appointments
Council Action Requested:
The City Council is asked to make two reappointments to the HPC and one new appointment.
Reappointment Krista Peterson 1/1/25 to 12/31/27
Reappointment Mark Simacek 1/1/25 to 12/31/27
New Appointment Wendi Shilts-Johnson 1/1/25 to 12/31/27
Background Information:
The HPC has nine-member positions with three terms expiring every year. There are no term
limits for HPC members. However, after three consecutive terms, the positions must also be
open to new applicants.
The two Commissioners seeking reappointment have both served the HPC well with good
attendance. Commissioner Simacek’s experience in construction and preservation knowledge
has been invaluable. Commissioner Peterson is a newer member with an eagerness to learn and
even volunteered to attend the Statewide Preservation Conference in Red Wing this past fall.
She reported back to the HPC on all she had learned with great enthusiasm.
Wendi Shilts-Johnson was selected to fill the vacant position held by exiting Commissioner
Dave Youngren. The interview Committee (Lisa Leifeld, Council Chair of the Historic
Preservation Committee, Cindy Toppin, HPC Chair, and Dan Wietecha, City Administrator).
The committee believed she had a great understanding of the HPC’s duties and a strong interest
in historic preservation.
