1. Postcards to Collect Email Addresses – Lee
Lee reported that Communications Coordinator Skelly had drafted a postcard-type document
for commissioners to distribute at events as a way to collect contact information of
participants, including email addresses. The cards contain a QR code that will lead interested
people to the sign-up page on the city’s website where they can input their information and
request commission news and updates.
Skelly is the staff person with access to this information, so anything commissioners want to
send to people on the list needs to be provided to Skelly for distribution. Neither Lee nor
commissioners will have direct access to this information.
Arts and Culture Commission August 14, 2024 Minutes
Page 2 of 6
Hollenbeck asked about email addresses collected previously. Lee requested those be
provided to her, to then be forwarded to Skelly.
On the 5.5 x 4.5-inch postcard mockup provided to commissioners, Skelly indicated she could
order 500 printed copies for $95.00, which is 19 cents apiece, and asked for the commission’s
approval to order.
Motion by Vice Chair Read to purchase 500 postcards for $95.00. Seconded by Commissioner
McCoy. Motion carried.
McCoy will add the sign-up link to the Google calendar site.
5. Recap of Electrical Box Painting Event – Wagner
Wagner reported she and Hollenbeck were at the event all day on Saturday and said it was great for
community building, and the finished product is an asset to the community. They lauded Artist Jessie
Eckroad for all her hard work and countless hours dedicated to the project. They agreed she was the
best person to do the project, with both an art and environmental sciences background to support
the content.
Read said he saw many positive posts by community members about the event on Facebook.
Wagner then offered constructive feedback for future painting events. She said they could have
arrived earlier because there were a lot of questions from pickleball players at the nearby courts
about what was going on, which slowed things down. Many, but not all, timeslots were filled by
people coming to paint, which left a lot unfinished that day. Some people went back afterwards to
paint and finish because not as much was accomplished during the sign-up period as anticipated. She
acknowledged these unforeseen circumstances, which were difficult to predict for a first-time event
like this.
Wagner suggested commission members have identification such as nametags or shirts to distinguish
them as commissioners at events. Lee will look into this and report back.
Hollenbeck said Mayor Fasbender and Artist Eckroad were onsite today to finish the painting of the
electrical box and addition of anti-graffiti coating ahead of the unveiling event being held tomorrow
night at 6:00 p.m. for those who can show up.
Eckroad told commissioners she would like to do a similar project again if the opportunity presents
itself, though would increase to two days of signups for painting to ensure project completion. She
also said she would simplify the project by having participants paint by color rather than divided
squares.
Commissioners agreed the project was worthwhile and would like to explore the painting of more
electrical boxes in the future, whether hand painted or wrapped. Hollenbeck will connect with Parks

and Recreation Director Jenkins to discuss future electrical box painting opportunities and
subsequent funding, as well as which electrical boxes are owned by the city.
Wagner asked if anyone alerted the media about the unveiling event. She was directed to contact the
Hastings Journal and KDWA.
6. “Artistry in the Air” Fall Event Update – McCoy
Saturday, September 28 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Vermillion Falls Park
Commissioner McCoy has officially confirmed with musicians The Roe Family Singers (acoustic
performance) and Classical Harpist Amy Nam for the event. He hasn’t yet heard back from the Moss
Piglets (bluegrass band) or Nick Fox, who he invited to fill the last slot. If that opening needs to be
filled, he will contact the University of River Falls Music Department.
McCoy reminded that the commission has committed $500 to the Roe Family Singers, $200 to Amy
Nan, $500 to the Moss Piglets, and $200 to Nick Fox—which falls within the approved budget. All
performers will need to submit an invoice for payment. McCoy will be the point of contact for them.
Harpist Nam inquired about the weather cancellation policy. McCoy suggested the determination be
made the day of the event. He and Read will make the decision and contact musicians immediately.
There will be no backup date for event.
Commissioners discussed providing canopy tents, four in total, for musicians that will be spread out
along the trail. Hollenbeck and Read/HPAC both committed to providing one each. Hollenbeck will
reach out to the Parks Department and Spiral Brewery to see if tents can be borrowed. Wagner will
contact the Historical Society.
Regarding plein air painting at the event, Read said the University of River Falls will let him know
about event participation when school starts. Should they have any interested artists, they will be
added to the existing confirmed painters.
Hollenbeck spoke with owners of The Studio Downtown, and they are excited to display the plein air
paintings. Read will make the tags with artist identification and contact details, though none of the
pieces will be titled.
McCoy and Read will walk the venue next week and identify spaces for musicians and plot the zones
for plein air artists.
7. Creative Convergence Event – October 3rd, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Hollenbeck asked the group about details. They discussed venue. McCoy will contact the Confluence
to see if they have availability on October 3rd. Hollenbeck will reach out to The Studio Downtown,
which is where the spring event was held, as a backup location.
Hollenbeck will reach out to River Valley Band to see if they would like to host the event.
Arts and Culture Commission August 14, 2024 Minutes
Page 4 of 6
Commissioners discussed the introductions and social aspects of the last event and how it could be
more time efficient. Suggestions included bingo, clarity of expectations and modeling of that
behavior, or table topics managed by commissioners stationed at each table.
Commissioner McCoy will be unable to attend the event.
8. Commission Sign Update
Read worked with Graphic Design on composition and printing of signs—a two-sided A-frame and
smaller black and white directional signs to use at events.
9. Public Art Map – Hollenbeck
Hollenbeck reported that while she was at a meeting with the Downtown Business Association, it was
suggested the public art map be expanded to include a scavenger hunt. Further details and time
frame were not given.
9.1. Indigenous Peoples Day Project with School District – Humphrey
Humphrey reported the School District very recently hired a liaison. The parent group is meeting with
the new hire tomorrow to fill her in, and the superintendent is going to transfer event planning
responsibilities to her. Right now, the Native American Parent Advisory Committee (NAPAC) has the
Nashke Native Games owner coming to family night at the library on October 8th to teach the games.
The library will be hosting an indigenous author event on October 14th. If the commission wants to
partner and contribute, it can invite an indigenous artist to perform music in the pavilion area to
supplement the library’s author event. Humphrey will reach out to her contacts to find a musician to
perform.
Wagner asked how the commission can best support Humphrey, who will be representing NAPAC at
the event. She suggested commissioners could attend the next NAPAC planning meeting on Thursday,
September 5th at 6:00 p.m. Wagner will be out of town on that date, and Read will check his
schedule.
NEW BUSINESS
10. HPAC Tour of 213 Ramsey Street – Read
Read shared that the Hastings Prescott Arts Council (HPAC) is looking for space for their organization,
as they are currently in the throes of finding out if they will be losing their existing space in Prescott.
He said the tour at 213 Ramsey Street was great and described the space as ideal for HPAC and spoke
of the opportunity to utilize that ADA-compliant space for art classes, gallery shows, movie
screenings, and small community events. He said the space could be utilized as a central location for
others to use as well, and they could form a partnership with Hastings Community Education. Read
said a report on the space was presented to the HPAC Board, and they voted to formally put together
a proposal to pursue the space.
Arts and Culture Commission August 14, 2024 Minutes
Page 5 of 6
Economic Development Coordinator Menke, who gave the tour, said the property is under the
Hastings Economic Development and Redevelopment Authority (HEDRA) umbrella. He added the city
plans to invest in furnace and air conditioning replacement. He explained that the existing tenant has
expressed interest in remaining at the property, so the plan at the September 12th HEDRA meeting is
to present both options. It will be up to the HEDRA Board to decide which option it would like to
pursue, and that neither is guaranteed.
11. Letter of Support for HPAC Leasing 213 Ramsey Street – Hollenbeck
Hollenbeck said that during the tour, she was approached by HPAC to ask if the Arts and Culture
Commission would be open to offering a letter of support for HPAC to lease the space. Menke
advised that the HPAC proposal and recommendation letter would need to be done before HEDRA
receives their meeting packet for the September 12th meeting. He said both the proposal and letter
would need to be received by September 3rd at the latest, so he would have time to review the
materials before the HEDRA packet is sent out.
Read said he would like to deliver a proposal to commissioners for review, and they could write a
letter of support. Due to time constraints before the commission’s next meeting, Hollenbeck
suggested Read create a proposal and email it to commissioners for review. Those who have
comments or questions can contact Read directly. The letter of support would then be put together
by Hollenbeck to go into the HEDRA packet as an attachment to HPAC’s proposal.
Hollenbeck sought authorization from commissioners to write a letter of support for HPAC and
requested a motion.
Commissioner Wagner moved that the Arts and Culture Commission write a letter in support of HPAC
securing the space at 213 Ramsey Street. Seconded by Commissioner McCoy. Vice Chair Read
abstained from the vote. Motion carried.
12. City Hall Tour – September 21st, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - Hollenbeck
Hollenbeck said she was approached by the Historical Society for the commission to host another City
Hall tour on September 21st in conjunction with the downtown Fall Festival, an Artspace event, and
Foxtoberfest at Spiral Brewery. She asked Cindy Taupin, a gifted tour guide who will be unable to
attend, to tweak and expand the script for others to conduct the tours.
Mayor Fasbender will be on site to open the building for the tour. Hollenbeck suggested getting more
information on the project currently happening at City Hall because it is now part of the building’s
history. She was directed to contact City Planner Justin Fortney, who is the project manager.
Hollenbeck asked for commission volunteers to serve as tour guides or be on site to help guide traffic.
Read and Wagner offered to help.

The middle of the mural is a faded map of Hastings, MN in its current
state. This not only gives an ode to the community, but also as the years
pass and the city changes, people can remember what the town used to
be “back in the day” when it hosted Hockey Day Minnesota in 2026. The
stakeholders can decide if you would like words or symbols pinning
specific landmarks and businesses, or if you prefer a strictly grid map.
Additionally, the specific location highlighted can be changed per request.

To the right of the wall, the words “Greetings from Hastings Civic Arena”
are boldly featured. Cars driving by will be able to recognize the
building immediately. The font of “Hastings” was chosen intentionally
with the “H” representing the arch of the current Hastings bridge and
the strong curve of the “S” representing the iconic old spiral bridge.
The vintage hockey skates tie the entire composition together, giving a
nod to the history of hockey. The blue background is a close up of an ice
hockey arena.

can be activated as a tool for positive community engagement! She earned her BA
from the University of California Davis and her MFA from Minneapolis College of Art
and Design.
Artist Statement
Murals and mosaics are my favorite tools to create welcoming public spaces,
activating a canvas in which people can come together and celebrate their stories,
what they have in common and their collective dreams and intentions for the future.
Done right,a mosaic or mural inspires the sentiment:“This is our space, and who we
are and what we do here is important!”
We are better and brighter together
GoodSpace Murals is a community-focused public art studio specializing in
large-scale murals and mosaics.Founded in 2016,our mission:is to create high
quality, large scale community driven public art that seeds community ownership
and agency in public spaces,upli
We are muralists who:
•use art to promote community development by sharing the unique expression and
interests of a community and by reclaiming the stories and identity within public
spaces.
•involve the community through socially relevant themes that unite us and celebrate
what brings us together.
•teach a high quality process of fine-art making in the creation of a community mural.
•use the process of making a mural to raise a sense of place and pride in community
The GoodSpace assistant team is a team of contracted artists who work with Greta to
facilitate the integration of the community hand into large public art pieces. The
GoodSpace fabrication team is crucial in the fabrication and installation of the work
while also aiding in the creation of fun spaces for successful community engagement
during community paint parties and make sessions. Many of the assistants have been
working with GoodSpace for more than five years. They are committed and trained
artists who believe in the power of art to create positive social and cultural change.
Project Proposal:
The GoodSpace Method
We are thrilled to spread this indirect mural technique that encourages larger community
participation and durable long-lasting beautiful murals in public spaces. This combo,
community engagement +Poly Tab Technique has been used for 10+years by GoodSpace
Murals and we’re calling it the GoodSpace Mural Method..To learn even more about this
method, watch this 2 minute video &check out the origins of the poly tab mural
technique. We have used this method on projects across the United States (urban and rural),
and all of our work Samples were created using this technique. The GoodSpace Method
combines community input and the design skills of a professional and experienced muralist,
give hundreds of people the chance to actively participate in the mural’s creation, and last
longer and weather better than murals painted directly on the wall. But,what does a mural
using the GoodSpace Method look like?
Phase 1:Community Design:
We start with locally facilitated community gatherings to identify themes, ideas and
images that resonate with the community (city of Hastings). As Minnesotans we love ice
skating and grew up around all things hockey…however,we don’t assume to know or
understand the true importance of Hockey to the Hastings community specifically. We
lean on community conversations to flush out those design elements and broader mural
themes. We would also take that trip to visit the Civic Arena and consider the best
placement of the mural and best strategy for the mural substrate. We then take these
ideas and design a first dra
to identify the perfect symbols and models to represent the unique community story,in
this case,Hastings +Hockey!
Phase 2:Community Fabrication:
Once the design is approved it is projected onto specially prepared mural fabric,
creating a giant paint-by-number canvas. These fabric panels are brought into the
community for paint parties where any-and everyone can help paint. These paint
parties seed community ownership and a greater buy-in for the project (and are
awesome photo opps!)They also really help us create the base coat of the mural,
seeding the idea that “I made that, you made that,we made that!”
Phase 3:Installation and Community Celebration:
Once the community has laid down that base coat of paint ,the GSM team lead by
Greta McLain, does the detail work and over-painting in a studio (painting the portraits,
etc.)before the mural is permanently installed on the wall like wallpaper. In the case of
the Hastings project site,we would take the fabric panels and adhere them to a substrate
that would then be installed on the wall base.In the past we have used Dibond Panels
and would work with experts connected to the project to identify the best substrate for
your project.
Then we would celebrate!Hopefully connecting during a project dedication to celebrate
the power of community and all that we can do when we work together.
Possible Timeline:
●Fall 2024:Artist Selection Process and Approval
●March 2025:Phase 1:Community Design -1st Artist visit +listening sessions and
site research
●April/May 2025:Design presentation,edits and approval
●June 2025:Phase 2:Community Fabrication!-2nd Artst Visit for Public
Community Paint Parties
●August/September 2025:Phase 3:Installation and Celebration -3rd Artist Visit
for installation
Working with the Hastings Community:
It would be our pleasure to utilize the GoodSpace Method for the Hockey focused
mural project for the city of Hastings.
Thank you for inviting us to submit our credentials for your consideration!
The GoodSpace Method starts with facilitated, community gatherings we
call Listening Sessions to identify themes, ideas and images that are
meaningful for a particular group.
Once the design is approved it is projected onto polytab, creating a giant
paint-by-numbers.
The polytab sheets will be brought out into the community for paint
parties run by the GSM team where anyone and everyone can help paint.
After that,we do the detail work and overpainting in the studio. When
Ready, the canvases are installed like permanent, exterior wallpaper.
Once installed, polytab murals look like they were painted directly onto the
wall, are permanent, and last longer than murals painted directly onto the
wall. The community organizes ribbon cuttings to celebrate!

Artist Statement:
As a mural artist,my work revolves around my fascination with the intersection of nature and
architecture.I am deeply intrigued by the ways in which human-made structures often echo the
forms and patterns found in the natural world.Through my large-scale murals,I aim to immerse
viewers in scenes where the lines between organic and constructed blur.
My murals are not merely decorations but immersive experiences designed for spaces where
people gather—restaurants, workspaces, and community hubs.I use vibrant and bold colors to
forge abstract representations of nature, translating the fluidity and diversity of natural forms into
visually striking compositions.By doing so,I invite viewers to reconsider their surroundings and
to find beauty in the interplay between human and natural elements.
I play with the juxtaposition of vibrant colors and muted tones to create depth and contrast,
enhancing the visual impact of my work. Each mural draws inspiration from its surrounding
environment, with the plants and patterns I feature carefully selected to resonate with the
specific space. This approach allows my murals to become an integral part of the locations they
inhabit, enriching the atmosphere with a sense of place and purpose.
In my recent explorations of 3D murals,I have incorporated woodworking techniques to add a
sculptural dimension to my art. This innovation brings a tactile quality to my work, inviting a
more immersive interaction.
I believe that all humans are inherently connected through nature, and I strive to capture this
universal harmony in my designs.Even if the connection cannot be articulated directly,I aim for
my murals to evoke a sense of unity and tranquility, resonating on a deeper level with all who
encounter them.
Project Proposal
"Blades and Blossoms"is an innovative mural project that aims to celebrate the unique
character of Hastings by merging the town's local flora with its rich hockey history. The mural will
feature abstract elements that capture the essence of both the natural and cultural heritage of
Hastings, creating a visually striking and meaningful piece that resonates with the community.
Because the nature of my work is botanical abstract,I will be focusing on abstract forms and
patterns inspired by my research of the local flora and hockey history.Rather than depicting
literal images, the design will focus on capturing the essence and emotional resonance of these
elements. The representational elements of the mural will be the local flora of hastings.
This mural will be a unique and engaging mural that intertwines the natural and cultural heritage
of Hastings in an abstract and vibrant manner.By capturing the essence of local flora and
hockey history, the mural will serve as a landmark and lasting tribute to the town’s identity and
foster a sense of connection and pride within the community.

Descriptive Sample List
Sample 1:Family Tree Clinic Murals
These two murals were commissioned by the Family Tree Clinic to serve as welcoming murals
for the two lobbies of the clinic. They wanted to create a space that would make visitors feel
safe and welcome at the clinics as opposed to the uninviting look of most clinics. They asked 9
local artists to create designs based on our interpretations of healing. We listened to recordings
from locals as well as patrons at the clinic about their own healing journeys. We then used these
recordings to influence our design. My design was about the role of nature in positively affecting
mental health. This is something that was shared in the recordings and is also a part of my
personal mental health journey. The feedback from patrons and staff was overwhelmingly
positive.
Sample 2:Chroma Zone Mural Festival 2022
This large scale mural was commissioned by the Creative Enterprise Zone of St.Paul
Minnesota. The prompt was very loose and I chose to depict an artist's dream world. This mural
is a combination of sketches I’ve created as an artist from as far back as the age of 10.I’ve
always focused on nature and I leaned into that for this mural. This mural is located at the
Multifamily Carpet Cleaners,a family owned local business.
Sample 3:Life in Color
This mural is part of a series of 2 murals painted on wood panels. These murals will be installed
in two different youth centers in St.Cloud Minnesota. The designs are based on central MN
plants and animals. It also features some cultural elements such as farming and gardening. The
youth at these centers will be able to paint directly on the murals, like a coloring book.I will be
meeting with the youth to talk about my career in the arts as well as to demonstrate painting
techniques.
Sample 4:Dakota County Juvenile Center Murals
This large-scale project features 12 murals in the Juvenile Center in Hastings Minnesota. The
purpose of this project was to create murals in collaboration with the youth at the juvenile center.
The murals are in 2 cafeterias.5 relaxation rooms. And 6 murals in various community gathering
spaces.3 of the murals were created with the youth where I asked them what they wanted to
see,and they were able to paint with me.The staff at the juvenile center believe in rehabilitation
and the power of art to create safe spaces for youth. As a youth worker of 8 years, this project
was near and dear to my heart.
Sample 5:Augsburg Mural
This mural was commissioned by Augsburg College.I researched local plants and created a
mural that the art students got to paint almost entirely. The purpose was to demonstrate mural
making to the students as well as give them their first opportunity to paint a mural.A few of
those students still paint murals to this day!
Hello! I am Kada Goalen, founder and president of KADA CREATIVE, LTD. I specialize in creating large-
scale, site-specific murals that celebrate community, culture, and history. My work is driven by a deep
passion for transforming public spaces into vibrant and meaningful landmarks that resonate with the
local community. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to Hastings' rich cultural tapestry by
creating a mural that celebrates its hockey history and welcomes visitors to this historic river town.
My approach to mural-making is deeply rooted in community engagement, environmental
sustainability, and the celebration of local culture and history. I believe that murals should not only
beautify a space but also tell a story that resonates with the community. This involves a collaborative
process that starts with understanding the local culture, history, and aspirations of the community.
For this opportunity, I would begin by working with key stakeholders, including the City of Hastings
staff, the Hastings Arts & Culture Commission, and community leaders. These engagements will help
gather insights and ideas that ensure the mural reflects the diverse voices of the community and
becomes a shared vision.
The design phase involves translating these inputs into a cohesive visual concept. I create preliminary
sketches and digital mock-ups, which are then presented to the community and the Hastings Arts &
Culture Commission for feedback. This iterative process ensures that the final design is both visually
appealing and meaningful.
The installation phase involves meticulous planning and execution. I use 100% low VOC acrylic paint to
ensure the mural's durability and environmental friendliness. My team and I, along with community
volunteers, will collaborate to bring the mural to life, fostering a sense of ownership and pride among
participants.
What inspires and drives me to make murals is the transformative power of public art to foster
community connection and pride. Murals are a powerful medium for storytelling, education, and social
change, and I am passionate about creating art that inspires and engages the public.
I look forward to the possibility of discussing this project further and bringing my vision to life for the
Hastings Civic Arena. Thank you for considering my application.

WORK SAMPLES - IMAGE LIST
1. LAKE STREET AND 35W MURAL
Medium: Acrylic | North and South Transit Stations | Minneapolis, MN| Completed: 2023
I was commissioned by Metro Transit to enhance the 35W and Lake Street Station in Minneapolis through the creation
of two large-scale murals. These murals were strategically placed on the pillars and hide walls, utilizing the station's
unique architectural elements as a canvas. The artwork captures the energy and vibrancy of Lake Street, featuring
native bird species set against bold color palettes. The project was a collaborative effort involving a team of local
apprentices who assisted in realizing this design and artistic vision. In addition, a specialized contribution came from
Stacia Goodman Mosaics, who integrated mosaic elements into the bird wings, adding a subtle but impactful shimmer
to the overall design. The completed murals now serve as enhancements for the Metro Transit station, contributing to
a more engaging, pleasant, and welcoming environment for daily commuters and visitors alike.
2. COLISEUM MURAL
Medium: Acrylic | Dimensions: 70' x 12' x 0’ | Minneapolis, MN | Year Completed: 2023
I was commissioned by Redesign, Inc. to support art in this reimagined Coliseum building. The work included the
restoration of the historic Freeman’s as well as a wish to have a mural that imagined past and present as a beautiful
fusion. The mural was part of the restoration of the Freeman Department Store Sign. “Kada’s work is an outward
expression of what the Historic Coliseum Building means to “lift as we climb,” says Urban Design Perspectives’ Alicia
Belton, FAIA, NOMA.
3. VINTAGE MEETS MODERN - NORTH SIDE MURAL
Medium: Acrylic | Dimensions: 26’ x 30’ x 0’ | Saint Paul, MN | Completed: 2016
I was commissioned by Vintage on Selby Apartments to celebrate their local community and area. I incorporated
images that reflected the history of the area while also adding vibrant, bold colors and art to reflect the area today. To
involve the community in this mural, we incorporated a paint day during a neighborhood festival. Community
members helped us paint the first layer of this vibrant mural. We had many paintbrushes and paint on hand for
everyone. We facilitated the painting so both young and old could participate. It generated so much interest within the
community. It was a great event. As with each project I work on, for this mural, I provided a timeline of completion and
all of the necessary supplies for the work, including but not limited to scaffolding, materials for community paint days,
where occurring, and the highest quality, low VOC acrylic paint, as well as an anti-graffiti coating to provide durability
and longevity in even the harshest conditions.
4. GLACIAL VALLEY PARK
Medium: Acrylic | Dimensions: 10’ x 21’ x 0’ | Cottage Grove, MN | Completed: 2023
For the Glacial Valley Park Building Project in Cottage Grove, time layers intertwine as bold graphics recall ancient
glaciers, wildlife, and fossils whispering past tales. Vivid depictions of today's valley and fauna invite sustainability and
exploration, providing a journey through Glacial Valley's history and celebrating its enduring natural splendor. The park
building sought to honor the land's glacial history while also celebrating the vibrancy of the land today, creating a
dynamic and engaging mural that reflects the rich tapestry of the area's past and present

MEDIUM: ACRYLIC | DIMENSIONS: 13’ X 30’ X 0’ | MINNETONKA, MN | COMPLETED: 2021
The owners of the delicious DelSur Empanadas wanted this mural to capture the elements of their Argentinian culture,
such as wine, music, dancing, food, and fútbol. I used soft yet bold colors and a graphic black outline to celebrate the
vibrancy of Argentinian culture. In addition to featuring the wine, folk music, dancing, and fútbol of their culture, the
mural wouldn’t be complete without the delicious empanadas of DelSur!
6. BURNES BUILDING INTERIOR MURAL
MEDIUM: ACRYLIC | DIMENSIONS: 9' X 40' X 0’ | HOPKINS, MN | COMPLETED: 2022
This mural for the Burnes Building in Hopkins, MN, honors Dr. Catherine Burnes, known as 'Doc Kate,' the first woman to
graduate from the University of Minnesota Medical School and the only doctor in Hopkins in the late 1800s. The clients
wanted a design celebrating Doc Kate's work and Hopkins' history. I used vivid colors, modern design, and realistic
historical references. The mural features a sunburst and contemporary shapes, with historical elements in black and gray
for accuracy. Glazing techniques bring the background to life, with details meticulously researched with help from The
Hopkins Historical Society. It was a joy to create a mural that tells a story and captivates viewers.
7. LYNLAKE STREET ART SERIES
MEDIUM: ACRYLIC | DIMENSIONS: 25’ X 12' X 0’ | MINNEAPOLIS, MN | COMPLETED: 2023
I was thrilled to be selected to add my art to this wonderful street art series on LynLake in Minneapolis. Using spray and

MEDIUM: ACRYLIC | DIMENSIONS: 8’ X 15' X 0’ | 8' X 10' X 0' | SAINT PAUL, MN | COMPLETED: 2022
The University of Minnesota School of Mechanical Engineering commissioned me to create a mural for its newly
renovated space, with the goal of enhancing vibrancy and engagement. The design features bold graphic elements in
the University’s maroon and gold colors, with blue accents. This mural serves as a welcoming and engaging focal point.
9. WINGSPAN
MEDIUM: ACRYLIC | DIMENSIONS: 80’ X 18’ X 0 | SAINT PAUL, MN | COMPLETED: 2022
I was commissioned by St. Anthony Park Community Council to complete this mural on two sides of the Murphy Rigging
building. SAPCC let me really delve into all of the different styles and breadth of my work. I wanted to incorporate realism,
graphic, soft and geometric styles. I love the bright colors and geometry paired with both the black and white details and
soft flowers. The balance of these contrasting elements is something I love to incorporate into my work.
10. PLACE VIA SOL
MEDIUM: ACRYLIC | DIMENSIONS: 36’ X 12' X 0’ | MINNEAPOLIS, MN | COMPLETED: 2022
PLACE VIA SOL is a mixed-income, transit-oriented development that features the arts and affordable living
opportunities. I was commissioned to create a mural that reflected the value and vision of this new location. This mural
features flora and fauna native to Minnesota with characteristics and meanings that represent the values of Place Via Sol.
This 4 story mural was such an honor to create.

BIOGRAPHIES
Lili Lennox is a seasoned professional muralist with 20 years of
painting experience and mural project management, with a solid
reputation for vivid designs, precise execution, and quality
workmanship. Raised on the Minnesota prairie in Morris, Lili is an
honors graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College and a veteran of
the professional theatre community of Minneapolis, working for
years as a freelance Scenic Artist for institutions such as the
Guthrie, Children’s Theatre, the Minnesota Opera, and Macy’s
Special Events. The skills learned as a theatre painter plus an
entrepreneurial spirit propelled her to shift her work to murals in
2009. She has since been awarded numerous public art
commissions and was featured on an episode of Pioneer Public
Television's Postcards, an award-winning art and culture program
showcasing the people and communities of western Minnesota.
See it here.
In recent years Lili has expanded her work into fine art, winning
several awards at the Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibition. She
has also directed a portion of her mural work to outreach into
Minnesota’s smaller communities with 2,000 or fewer residents,
introducing municipal organizations to the process of working
with an artist to create custom public artworks that reflect the
heart of their communities.
Niko Alexander is a graphic designer and mural artist with over 10
years of experience working as a creative in the athletics
industry. After graduating from St. Cloud State University with a
BFA in Graphic Design in 2013, Niko was fortunate to work for
more than 9 years as a Graphic Designer/Creative Director with the
University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Creative Department,
supporting the design and recruiting needs of student-athletes,
staff, and coaches. During his time as a Gopher staff member, Niko
was able to hand paint murals and signage in many of the
stadiums and support buildings for the U of M. After leaving
college athletics, his full-time role as a senior designer with a
national sports branding agency has allowed him to continue
creating memorable experiences for student-athletes and
professionals across the country. Outside of his sports design
career, Niko is a part-time sign painter and mural artist, and also
as a painter with the Walldogs, a volunteer mural organization. He
particularly enjoys the hands-on process of bringing a human
element to public art.

ARTIST STATEMENT + PROCESS
I am eager to accept painting challenges with unique
requirements, such as a grand scale or painting onto unusual
surfaces or objects. From painting a decommissioned rail car for a
western Minnesota town to painting a life-size sculpture of a
moose for a museum in Alaska, I approach each project’s
distinctive attributes with earnest excitement and carefully honed
painting skills.
I am no stranger to projects that are large in scale and budget. In
2013 I was awarded a $45,000 commission to design and create
murals totaling more than 3,000 ft2 for the City of St. Cloud as a
backdrop for their central bus transit station, my first public art
work. I finished a month ahead of schedule, under budget, and
delivered a series of colorful, vibrant murals that enhanced their
downtown’s visual landscape. Since then, I have completed more
than 25 public works across the state of Minnesota and nationally.
If selected, I would bring to the Hastings Civic Arena’s mural the
same keen artistic eye coupled with efficient work practices and
responsible budget adherence.
Collaboration is part of my daily experience as a muralist. Each
project is a delicate dance between clients, project managers,
business owners, installers, and the many other players that are
involved in a large undertaking such as this, and so I am
constantly aware of the space my work occupies in the larger
scope. This self-awareness pushes me to execute within expected
limitations of time and budget, removes much of the artistic ego
that can be inhibiting to great collaboration, enhances overall
efficiency, and reduces friction. These, plus excellent painting
skills, will make for a great artistic addition to the Hastings Civic
Arena.
One of the fun challenges of this project will be in ensuring the
presentation of an authentic hockey voice in the mural. For this
reason, I have brought on my colleague Niko Alexander, a sports
graphic designer and signwriter, to help express the athletic voice
in the final mural design and creation.

PROJECT PROPOSAL
History, Hockey, and Pride
Hockey cards have been popular among sports enthusiasts and
collectors for decades and have been part of the sport’s fan culture
since the first hockey cards were produced in the early 1910s.
I propose to create a series of oversized fantasy mural “cards” to
adorn the side of the Civic Arena. Styled like hockey cards through
the decades, each card will present the stars of Hastings’ hockey
history including Dean Talafous, John Gruden, Jeff Taffe, Taylor
Chorney, Derek Stepan, Girls Hockey, and Squirts.
Sprinkled among these will be fantasy cards for some of the city’s
own stars: the Mississippi River, Hastings City Hall, and the old Spiral
Bridge. A vintage Rivertown Days pin and Hastings High School
pennant may also make an appearance.
Placed prominently across these elements will be the welcome
message, perhaps written along a curving white ribbon, a common
hallmark of murals, that instead ends as a roll of hockey tape,
bringing a fun, faux-3D element to the wall.
Included below is a sketch concept of a possible layout. Elements
may change with feedback and further research.

The mural will be created from aluminum composite panels (ACP), a
standard exterior substrate that is both weatherproof and waterproof
and can be cut to any shape. I will employ the services of a sign
installation company to install the painted mural on the concrete
surface. The panels will be supported by lightweight aluminum
framing that will be attached to the building’s exterior. The mural
would then be installed onto the framing with a combination of
surface hardware and a strong bonding adhesive tape. Final decisions
on installation will be made with the sign company in conjunction
with the Civic Arena.
The mural will be painted with a combination of Benjamin Moore
Aura exterior paint and Nova Color Acrylics, which are specially
formulated for exterior murals. The murals will be finished with two
coats of Modern Masters Masterclear Supreme UV protective coating
to ensure further long life of the mural’s colors.

Since 2016, I have been training under a professional sign painter, allowing me to gain experience in hand-lettering and mural design. The guidance has opened up connections in the sign industry and public art; as it led to me join the Walldogs, a group of sign painters and mural artists who volunteer to paint historical murals to revitalize downtown communities across the United States.

MAEVE GATHJE
I believe that public art has the power to transport us, to become a vessel for storytelling, and to reflect
community identity. We are deeply rooted to the places we call home and I believe that public art is
successful when it reflects both people and place. Creating new moments of wonder and exploration in
the otherwise mundane routines of the day is one of the joys of creating art for public spaces and in each
work I undertake, I strive to design and fabricate works that serve as a landmark in the eye of the public.
For this project, I propose to create a large-scale, iconic, and full-color mural that encompasses most of
the allotted wall space on the Hastings Civic Arena. The mural would feature the required text as well as
unique and dynamic imagery of the local team conveying pride in the City of Hastings and its historic
hockey legacy. In creating the imagery, I would draw on existing branding: team colors, typeface, etc. to
ensure that the work fits cohesively with current visual identities. The mural would be impactful and
easily readable from Highway 61.
As a stone and tile artist, I would utilize my unique skill to create a timeless and lasting mural in cut tile.
Concrete board panels serve as a durable surface for tile work. All materials would be rated for weather
and are exterior grade. The mural would be fabricated in panels to ensure ease of installation to the
existing surface of the building. Panels would be mounted to the side of the building using stainless steel
anchoring hardware which is built to last in exterior conditions while creating minimal alterations to the
exterior of the building. Cut tile is durable, vibrant, and unlike plastics or metal does not fade or rust
with time. In addition to being a durable material, I believe that cut tile is ideal for creating a unique
mural that is intended to become a landmark for the town of Hastings and the Hastings Civic Arena.
I approach this project with five years of experience in public sculpture, as well as fifteen years of
experience working in construction with general contractors. I know both the processes for creating
large-scale art works and the proper materials and structural considerations required when working with
existing architecture. In my work samples, you will find imagery of past mural work in tile. These
examples showcase my attention to detail in tile work. These pieces were intended for viewing at human
scale and are therefore more detailed and intricate. My proposal for this project would vary slightly in
that it would be designed to be more iconic, impactful, and legible from a distance.
In the creation of large community-based projects, intuition is paired with experience to bring out the
best in the materials that have been selected. If selected, I look forward to working with stakeholders to
create a piece of art that inspires pride in town and team. I strive to create unique and iconic pieces that
resonate with the place in which they rests; I aspire to create work that feels both new and timeless, as if
it has always been there.
